Sony Ericsson Unveils 1 phone for adventurers, 1 for couch potatoes

Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERICY) announced Wednesday two new Android smartphone: the Xperia Xperia RADIUS and active.

Both run Android 2.3, aka "gingerbread" and use the Mobile Bravia Engine.

Xperia Active

Both will be available in selected markets throughout the world in the third quarter, Sony Ericsson said.

The range seems to be focused on entertainment, and will be offered with headphones LiveSound, while active extremely strong focus on consumers with an active lifestyle.

Sony Ericsson has not responded to requests for comment by press time.

Highlights of new devices Xperia

Users will find the usual smartphone-still features both HD video cameras, access to Facebook, geo tagging and so on.

Ray is active have a 1 GHz processor and are equipped with a Display of reality with the Bravia Engine.

Sony introduced the reality mobile Bravia Engine Display/in January over the Xperia.

The Bravia engine is claimed to improve colors and details, just like its bigger counterpart in Sony Bravia TV.

The Display of reality is the response by Sony for the iPhone 4 high resolution Retinal Display.

Both phones are scratch-resistant touchscreen. Touchscreen Ray the Xperia measures 3.3 inches and active is three inches.

In some markets, the Xperia will be offered with LiveSound headphones and LiveDock. LiveDock let owners launch Android Market applications and concurrently load their smartphones.

the Xperia Active dust-proof and is water-resistant. Its screen has wet finger detection. Will also have a case of boom and a stereo headset.

Active Xperia comes with ANT + network technology that will offer ultra-low power screen heart rate monitoring.

Launching the Xperia Ray and active for different market segments is "a smart marketing move," Ramon Llamas, a senior research analyst at IDC, he stressed.

"There are tons of other Android devices out there highlighting applications and experience," Lama told TechNewsWorld.

"Sony Ericsson wants to push these devices such as Smartphones, but not just as a lifestyle and entertainment mobile devices," he said.

"How many Android sees now that are thin and run on Android 2.3?" asked Michael Morgan, a senior analyst with ABI Research.

"These days, that is just table stakes," Morgan told TechNewsWorld. "Now, Sony Ericsson differentiating itself with devices like active."

The new devices appear to indicate that Sony is taking a greater interest in his wing of smartphones.

Xperia Ray

"For a long time that it seemed as if Sony Ericsson was a bit of a red-headed stepchild," said ABI Morgan.

"Sony or Ericsson seemed to want to commit to it too. Now, I'm seeing more Japanese design influence, particularly active, which is a smartphone with a segmentation very specific, "he added

Smartphones in Japan are "extremely specialized," said Morgan. "Are solar devices, telephones, water, other types of phones," he elaborated.

However, the efforts of Sony Ericsson may be too little, too late.

"Our shows US Consumer Survey Sony Ericsson have a share of only about 1 percent of the US market," Dmitriy Molchanov, an analyst at the Yankee Group, told TechNewsWorld.

Still, 86 percent of 20 to 24 years old have a positive impression of the brand Sony Ericsson and both these phones, particularly active Xperia, target market, Molchanov said.

"Unfortunately, this is too little, too late" because both handsets lag other Android devices on the hardware side, Molard stressed.

"Nor has dual-core processors, and neither will support LTE," explained Molard.

Further, the Active Dock is offered with the Xperia "lacks the functionality of the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Atrix smartphone offers" and needs more robust software, Molard suggested.

"Built-in sports apps and a water-resistant shell for active are nice, but they are not marketed and worse," Molard opined.

The prospect of stomach churning Linux installation

It was just the other day that the suggestion was made that Linux is more suitable for men. That statement was a nice little storm of controversy, as alert readers may recall, both here on these virtual pages and elsewhere throughout the blogosphere.

The latest batch to be thrown on this tinderbox of a topic? A post on LXer provocatively titled, "anyone can use the Linux operating system".

Ninety percent of today's Linux distributions can be easily used by just about anyone when correctly configured and presented with a couple of minutes of explanation to the new user, "wrote thoughts on technology bloggers and Bodhi Linux lead developer Jeff Hoogland in his post on the site.

It's those first steps, however, that are critical-and where potential users may be lost due to obstacles encountered during the installation, has suggested.

"Ultimately the best way to get Linux into the hands of someone again and make sure that they provide a positive experience is the correct installation and configuration of the operating system from someone who knows what they're doing," concluded Hoogland. "Just like Windows or OSX, anyone can use Linux in 2011, but not everyone can install Linux".

The words were just appeared on the first page LXer comments began to appear-followed by more and more.

"Linux is a kickass OS, but do not install, operate, or maintain as Windows work," stressed oldgeek, for example. "Dontcha think if everyone knew that; and none of the smart asses that lurk forum pulling out the noobs could answer, that Linux would spread and flourish faster?!

"Do," said oldgeek. "I would take the challenge of being a rational voice in all these sites just to keep the noobs out shoe l33t."

Then again: "We [are] all missing the crucial issue, that is," countered Fettoosh. "A good level of quality free support for Linux does not exist.

"The Forum, although there are many of them are not good enough," Fettoosh added. "Having so many of them is a big problem. The way they are organized is a big problem. "

Soon it became clear that the topic had hit home with many readers. Linux girl couldn't resist taking a small sample of views herself down to the supremely well-air-conditioned Punchy Linux Penguin Saloon in the blogosphere.

"It is true that anyone can use GNU/Linux", educator and blogger Robert Pogson opined. "It is a GUI for charity".

In fact, Pogson taught First-Grader "to choose a mouse, and have had no problems with it at all," he recounted. "If the OEM install it properly and Put on retail shelves, GNU/Linux will sell just as he did for the netbook before M $ paid OEMs and as Android/Linux is selling like hotcakes, now."

Hyperlogos blogger Martin Espinoza had a similar story to tell.

"I put recently Natty on a Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) Your 1500-one of the great old heavy with a Core 2 Duo really early," he began.

"This is the car of my lady and provided with Windows XP, which runs until recently committed suicide and digital it blue-screening began on every boot," said Espinoza. "Funny, the machine is actually running quieter and cooler on Linux (with GNOME 2 desktop ' classic ') that with XP and considerably snappier as well.

"Since she spends almost all his time in Firefox anyway, using Linux has only improved their lives," Espinoza said. "Because I can fix most problems with the computer in any case, support is more difficult for at least one user. In fact, much less; who wants to Fix XP? "

Most people, in fact, "can barely use Windows," said Barbara Hudson, a blogger on Slashdot, that goes from "Tom" on the site. "They know how to use their usual applications, but ask them to create a new directory and save a file to it, and never will again".

The majority, in other words, using their computer to run only a limited set of tasks. Also, "if they had learned to do those tasks under linux first, switching to Windows would be just as hard as switching to linux," said Hudson.

Fortunately, this problem is resolving itself, "he added. "For more casual users, the operating system is becoming irrelevant-they just want to be able to use the content, not produce it, beyond some email and upload a video."

A few years from now, "any old tablet or smartphone will be their device of choice-even one that runs linux," he concluded.

Consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack took some of Hoogland exception.

"The last time I tried to download software via the web, went straight from the browser-based package manager," said Mack.

"I don't understand your complaint about sh file in Linux, since it is not harder than an exe file in windows," he added. "Tar files can be annoying, but it is rare for me to find one without a package available for most distributions somewhere, and I have to do something really technical I don't find a package when appropriate".

He was the only point Mack agreed with "odious forum/help users of the channel," said the girl from Linux. "But that is in no way limited to Linux, and there are better forums available."

Slashdot blogger hairyfeet wasn't so sure.

Linux is usable by anyone only "If you throw security out of the window and never update it or learn the make/model/firmware rev of every single piece of hardware, along with Bash conventions and how to navigate the forum," he said. "Refuse to do all this? Welcome to pain. "

Now that is 2011, hairyfeet "because there is no button ' find driver '?" he asked. "Why is when every other main OS for the last decade has had a stable ABI for hardware drivers, Linux users get to make the death March, pilot or must watch the treadmill for six months as a ' break ' Linux now?"

Chris Travers, however, focused on the bigger picture.

"Only an operating system, Linux is not" started a Travers, a Slashdot blogger who works on LedgerSMB project. "It is a lifestyle-one I think is that basically enable".

The adoption of Linux, then, means a change in lifestyle.

"A user to Windows, Linux is confusing, not so much because of what is lacking, but because of how one goes about solving problems," he explained. "Windows relies heavily commercial, off the shelf software to solve problems."

Linux, on the other hand, tends to rely on more flexible solutions; the software is often more difficult to learn, but once learned offers increased productivity, "he opined. "Yes, everyone can use Linux. But not everyone will. "

Who "move away from consumerism, towards greater independence and freedom," said Travers. "It takes some effort, and people didn't put forth the effort unless they have something to gain from it".

Therefore, "in the sale of the community, I think we should sell lifestyle, rather than the software," Travers suggested. "Linux has much to offer. Let us ensure that we make people aware that this is not cheap. "

Apple Amps up productivity with Final Cut Pro X

Professional video editing, get out your wallets. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) released a new version of Final Cut Pro, on Tuesday.

Final Cut Pro X reinvents video editing, according to Apple. Magnetic Timeline allows users to edit flexible lost canvas. Content of Auto-Categorizes content analysis on import based on the type of shot, media and people. Background rendering functionality allows the user to work without interruption. The new version is built on a modern 64-bit architecture and is available from Mac App Store for US $ 299.

Final Cut Pro X

The new Timeline feature is a remote magnetic approach to editing video, allowing users to drag and drop clips into the order you want. Clip connections allows users to connect as footage items, titles, and sound effects to move them all as one unit. Auditions for new functionality enables users to Exchange and compare collections of clips between takes.

Auto-Scan media content analysis on import and tag with useful information. Final Cut Pro X uses this information to organize your clips in collections, Smart. Users can add custom tags and a search by type of media, people and amount of zoom.

Final Cut Pro X is completely rebuilt from the ground and will take advantage of Mac hardware. The program uses its multi-threaded and GPU processing for fast rendering and playback in real time. The pipeline of ColorSync color managed color consistency guarantees from input to output.

Final Cut Pro X includes tools for audio editing and color correction and is compatible with two apps. Movement 5 for 4 Professional animations and compressor for encoding multimedia advanced are available at the Mac App Store for $ 49.99.

Apple did not respond to the request of MacNewsWorld for comments from the time of printing.

New features in Final Cut Pro X are designed to simplify the process of editing and increase productivity.

"I believe that this new version looks very exciting," Ryan Sciarrotta, production assistant of Syncronos Design, told MacNewsWorld. "I believe that the addition of better background rendering. This will allow people to continue working on a project while Final Cut works behind the scenes to render out what you need. In the past, long waiting times for rendering would completely stop your work on the program. "

Magnetic characteristics Timeline offers users an easier way to switch the location of the clip and see how it would play in different orders. Other programs have used, and now is part of the arsenal Final Cut.

"The ability to connect the various clips together in a compound or keep them grouped clips together is something that I am happy to see in this new version," said Sciarrotta. "It was something I'd seen in other programs that I liked in Final Cut for a long time, and now it's finally here-and it looks even easier and better to use than I could imagine."

Apple is implementing what was learned from other products that is designed, then this is a step in the future. The new interface may take some getting used to for those comfortable with previous versions.

"The time line has a completely different look, as well as the entire interface," said Sciarrotta. "It seems that Apple is trying to make Final Cut more user-friendly by adopting some of the features already found in similar Apple products, like iPhoto and iMovie. Since this is a new interface, some veterans of the old system could have some problems, but I think the new content be enough to get people to switch. "

Apple has tried to make it easier to use with the addition of improved organizational tools Final Cut. Magnetic Timeline makes it easier for users to organize content.

"One of the advantages of the new version is the ease of consultation," said Sciarrotta. "For one, the time necessary to compare the shots has been streamlined. It seems easier to use. The exchange between brings out the best shots for a scene was not difficult in the past, but could take some time. Now it looks like can be done in seconds.

"Their new line of time also allows you to search best clips, allowing clip tag with keywords. This is also a feature like that found in other Apple products, now finally implemented in a product that makes sense for, "he added.

One thing that may be cause for concern is the characteristic of self-analysis, noted Sciarrotta.

"This feature will automatically sort and categorize your shots," he explained. "While they play well, I hope there will be a way to disable this, because in my work I have to be very specific about how to categorize my means of communication."

Overall, Sciarrotta scores very positively the new version.

"This version just seems faster in every way. In the new version X, Final Cut will make a lot of work for you so you can keep moving and keep your creative juices flowing, "he said.

Users who have a recent version of Final Cut Pro can be resistant to drop $ 300 for a new one. Apple is trying to attract these customers by offering new tools and a platform completely rebuilt to 64 bit that takes full advantage of Mac hardware.

"If a user already has the earlier version, they may not be interested in buying a new version," Roger Kay, founder and principle of Endpoint Technologies, told MacNewsWorld. "You can do an update. How to justify yet another spending for the same product? "

Could definitely be worth the price to some professional, though. People who use Final Cut every day for their work could benefit from these new tools.

"Whenever Apple introduces a new product, it is always ' the best '. It may be true, "said Kay.

"When they sell it, is the best, then emerges with a new one that is now the ' best '. Just people expect their applications to be automatically updated. Not necessarily want a completely new product. However, if you're a professional video editing, and what to do-and Final Cut Pro for professionals-you may need to spring for it. "

Time to start writing that iPhone 5 wishlist

Time to Start Writing That iPhone 5 Wish ListBy Chris Maxcer
MacNewsWorld
ECT News Network
6/11/23, 5: 12:00 am PT for months we have heard rumors that the next iPhone will be a ho-hum update relatively from this model. But suddenly the narrative is changed. Could Apple build some great leaps forward with the next iPhone hardware and design? Here are seven ways that Apple may build up further the device.

I had pretty much written off the idea that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) would release a new form factor for its upcoming iPhone 5, believing that Apple would leave the current phone ride for another year, much as the company did when he introduced the iPhone 3 g. Because Apple has released an iPhone for Verizon 4 late in the annual cycle of update, well, that was just another nail in the coffin of new conception.

But the latest rumors, sparked by Boy Genius Report, as well as a report by Bloomberg that cited anonymous sources familiar with the Apple programs, are tempting me to entertain a thought: with a new release scheduled for early August or September, could Apple there wow all entries in a new season of sales fall? After all, is heating up competition in the smartphone and Android phones are riding a rocket sales these days. Could Apple want a brand new ready-to-action option of holiday gifts?

As for me, I'm in the middle of a two-year AT&T (NYSE: T) contract with my iPhone 4, and because they are generally satisfied with the overall drive, Apple would have to come out with something spectacular, impressive for me to update it soon in my contract cycle. Still, Apple could find where improvement? What we must do to create a new unit of sell-out?

So, if Apple were able to deliver on all these new hardware features with an iPhone, I want to buy a 5? Unfortunately, that boils down to I could get a AT&T. new iPhone without a contract for 5 success? Probably. Another example that Apple knows how to do exciting and new products.

MacNewsWorld columnist Chris maxcer wrote about the tech industry since the birth of e-mail newsletters, and still remembers Mac clacking keyboards from high school-strategy of seed plantation of Apple to work. While he enjoys elegant and sublime tech gear, there's something to be said for turning it all off-or most of it-to go out. To take it, take a guess "Fullname" at Gmail.com.

16 June 2011
At first, I was in favour of the original Apple prices in-app subscription. Now they've softened Apple rules for publishers, and has changed my point of view. Raising the tariff rules, Apple is on track and clearly made a good move. At the same time, I have to believe that Apple is still missing the boat with publishers.
